Walter Hawkins - Selah

Yo. I haven't been posting much (at all) lately (for about seven or so months). But I have come to life and started re-upping some dead links (Universal Jones, Freddie Mccoy, Carolyn Franklin, Chuck Bridges and Isao Suzuki). Should you find more dead links just drop me a line in the comments and it'll be on my to do list.

I do have some new unblogged treasures waiting to get ripped but I don't have my turntable hooked up the right way as of now.

Wayne Davis - A View From Another Place

El Klan - Love Is A Swedish Thing

This record looks like it could be really lame but I don't think it is. Late 60's soul/funk, most of it uptempo, recorded in Sweden by a group of Mexicans. A cool cover of Cold Sweat with a nice break and a funky rendition of Knock On Wood are my favourites but there are some other nice tracks aswell.

Stu Gardner and the Sanctified Sound

Don't call it a comeback. But yeah, it's been a while. Anyway, here's a funk and soul album from singer-organ/piano/clavinet player Stu Gardner. Released on Volt (Stax) in 1974. For some backstory on Stu, check out this or that. This album has a couple of players in common with the Charles Wright LP I posted some time ago, namely Charles Wright himself, who contributes with some guitar and drummer James Gadson.

Sam Taylor Jr - The Tunnels Of My Mind

Junie - When We Do

Junie, at this time former Ohio Player, soon to be Funkadelic, released this, his first solo effort onWestbound in 1975. The music is varied, some all-out funk tracks and some tracks that reach for a pop-rock feel, but always some kind of funk lurking in the back.

Charles Wright - Doing What Comes Naturally

Charles Wright, who most people recnognize better when you add the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band after his name, recorded this two record set in 1973 for Dunhill records. The fellas playing with him here is Horace Jones, Werner Schuchner, Yusef Rahman, Bobby Knight, Carlos Mercado, Joel Peskin, Joe Banks and others.

Peddlers - Three In A Cell

The Peddlers have already been introduced on this blog with this post. Here's a track from Three In A Cell, released in 1968 on CBS.

On A Clear Day


This record is a bit different from the other one I posted. For example there's some strings present here, which isn't really consistent with The Peddlers and their small-group style. But it works sometimes. However, I like them best when they leave the strings alone. For a good example, listen to Still Of The Night which is a rock hard jazz-rock tune (not a fusion tune, mind you, but jazz-rock).

Soul-jazz from vibist Freddie McCoy, released in 1968 on Prestige. Players are Freddie McCoy on vibes and drums, Joanne Brackeen on piano and organ, Wally Richardson on guitar, Steve Wolfe on sitar, Lawrence Evans on bass, Ray Appleton on drums and Emanuel Green, Joseph Malignaggi and Peter Dimitriades on violins. Dave Blume arranged and conducted the set.

Myrth - Myrth

Myrth has to my knowledge just released this one album, on RCA in 1969. They consist of six members; Grier Cook on guitar and lead vocals, Eay Cork on bass, trumpet, baritone horn and vocals, Johnny Guthie on drums, Ken Mulholland on piano and organ, David Drury on guitar, trombone and vocals and Bob Kenrich on reed instruments and vocals.

Don't Pity The Man


The sound is diverse and ranges from the breakbeat funk of Myrthiolate to more experimental type tunes like Shed My Skin. The six-minute plus Don't Pity The Man goes through so many changes that when you're done listening you'll think you just heard four tunes, not one. The closer Myrthiadrine is also quite nice drugged out funk.

David Porter - Sweat & Love

Great 70's soul from the man most known for his days as Isaac Hayes songwriting partner. He released a couple of solo records on Stax after the golden years of the Hayes-Porter team had ended. This one is from 1973, his last one, I think.

Somebody Owns A Piece Of My Rock is my favourite track here but it isn't the only good one. Didn't Know Love Was So Good is great aswell, it kinda reminds me of Across 110th Street by Bobby Womack. Funny Money has a nice flute groove to it.

Universal Jones - Vol. 1

A nice funky album by Universal Jones who never released a second volume. Released on MGM/Verve in 1972. If you look to the far left on the cover you'll see every beat diggers favourite funk/folk singer Eugene McDaniels, who is a major contributer to this album. Mc D is listed as producer, lead vocalist, writer and acoustic guitar player, Sister Charlotte is the female lead vocalist, Maurice McKinley is on drums, Bob Woos is on guitars and bass, Leon Pendarvis is arranging and conducting the set aswell as playing bass and electric piano. There's additional musicians listed on the back cover.

River

Listen to the mellow groove of Tuesday Morning for a taste. River sounds like something straight from one of Eugenes solo albums from the early 70's. It's got that folky feel. There are three more good funk tunes, some more soulful ones and then there's the 10-minute jazz-funk tune Hello To The Wind.

Wlodek Gulgowski - The Music Of Wlodek Gulgowski

Pianist Wlodek Gulgowski released this album in 1972 on Senise (tiny label distributed by EMI). It's funky in parts and some kind of folky pop in other parts. Not every track is great but Who Was The Man and Yeah Man Song are. Vocals are by Maritza Horn, Wlodek handles keyboards, Waldy Hajer plays trombone, alto sax and violin, Hasse Rosén plays guitar, Jan Bergman plays bass, Stephen Möller plays drums, Henry Gustafsson is on flute, Malando Gassama plays congas, Inge Boström plays 1st violin and Frank Corvini 1st trumpet.

Irene Reid - The World Needs What I Need

Nice soul with a real fatback sound on some tracks. There's also some jazzy and some bluesy touches here and there. Released on Polydor in 1971, arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. Her version of My Way is really nice and gets lowdown and funky before the fade. Hey World, Let Love In is the song for the straight up funk heads.

J.A.L.N. Band - Life Is A Fight

Tight funk from the UK. Soulful, funky, smooth grooves with a hint of disco, kind of like George Clinton meets The Blackbyrds. Released on Magnet Records in 1976. People Think Again is dope, with a mellow groove and fitting vocals and Doin' A Parliament Thing is a nice imitation of the Clinton bands.
I'm not sure if it's true but I read that J.A.L.N. stands for Just A Lot of Noise.
