Gary Burton - Throb

Good, sometimes funky album by vibes player Gary Burton. Relaeased on the Atlantic label in 1969. Players are Jerry Hahn, Richard Greene, Steve Swallow and Bill Goodwin.

Myrth - Myrth

Myrth has to my knowledge just released this one album, on RCA in 1969. They consist of six members; Grier Cook on guitar and lead vocals, Eay Cork on bass, trumpet, baritone horn and vocals, Johnny Guthie on drums, Ken Mulholland on piano and organ, David Drury on guitar, trombone and vocals and Bob Kenrich on reed instruments and vocals.

Don't Pity The Man


The sound is diverse and ranges from the breakbeat funk of Myrthiolate to more experimental type tunes like Shed My Skin. The six-minute plus Don't Pity The Man goes through so many changes that when you're done listening you'll think you just heard four tunes, not one. The closer Myrthiadrine is also quite nice drugged out funk.

Jazz Crusaders - Lighthouse '69

By 1969 The Jazz Crusaders had begun moving into the funky area of jazz they would focus on for most of the 70's. They still have a good chunk of jazz left in their style though. This was recorded live at the Lighthouse with "their favourite bassist" Buster Williams. The main four Crusaders are Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson, Stix Hooper and Joe Sample. Lighthouse 69' was released on World Pacific Jazz.

Chuck Bridges and the L.A. Happening

A soul/funk record from 1969 (I think), released on the Vault label. I don't know a whole lot about these guys, but it seems this was their only LP. It's mostly good soul music, but there is also some more funk oriented tracks. These funky tunes are my favourites along with the soul pearl Head Over Heels.

Dillard Crume - And The Soul Rockers

Great James Brown-inspired funk/soul from this artist, otherwise mostly known as a gospel singer. Released on Alshire in 1969. I think I read somewhere that Maceo is playing on this, but I don't know. Regardless, there's some nice funky soulful singing going down in all of these tracks and the version of mother popcorn is poppin'.

Lou Rawls - The Way It Was The Way It Is

This is one of my personal favourites. Its gritty, late 60's soul produced by David Axelrod and released on the Capitol label. There is a great funk track in Season Of The Witch and a refreshing version of When A Man Loves A Woman, but all the tracks are nice and soulful.

Released on Impulse in 1969, this LP consists mostly of bluesy guitar playing on top of some soulful grooves. Mel also gives a vocal performance on Twist & Shout. Produced by Bob Thiele and arranged by Artie Butler. No info on the other players.
