A rare piece of instrumental funk that I picked up the other day at a flea market. I picked it up because I noticed Super Fly and Cisco Kid on the back cover. Turns out the whole album is mostly made up of raw breakbeat-funk with some fuzzy guitar, organ and horns. There's a definite library-funk vibe in here. I'm not sure what the story is with this record, there is no mention of musicians or producers/arrangers.

Only six minutes, or so, of music this time around. I didn't really feel the need to rip the rest of this album, but if someone wants it, give me a shout and I'll see if I can get around to it some time. Though unless you're into traditional arab music, you're not missing out. This track, however, is something fans of this blogs musical direction should check out. It's the swedish band Solar Plexus (Monica Dominique on organ, Carl-Axel Dominique on elec. piano, Bosse Häggström on bass and Tommy Slim Borgudd on drums) laying down a funk-rock-arab instrumental. Peep it!

Oh yeah, Bahi Barakat is on Tablah and Abdo is playing the Lute (I think). There's something you haven't heard before; funk with lute.

This record looks like it could be really lame but I don't think it is. Late 60's soul/funk, most of it uptempo, recorded in Sweden by a group of Mexicans. A cool cover of Cold Sweat with a nice break and a funky rendition of Knock On Wood are my favourites but there are some other nice tracks aswell.

Don't call it a comeback. But yeah, it's been a while. Anyway, here's a funk and soul album from singer-organ/piano/clavinet player Stu Gardner. Released on Volt (Stax) in 1974. For some backstory on Stu, check out this or that. This album has a couple of players in common with the Charles Wright LP I posted some time ago, namely Charles Wright himself, who contributes with some guitar and drummer James Gadson.

On A Clear Day

This record is a bit different from the other one I posted. For example there's some strings present here, which isn't really consistent with The Peddlers and their small-group style. But it works sometimes. However, I like them best when they leave the strings alone. For a good example, listen to Still Of The Night which is a rock hard jazz-rock tune (not a fusion tune, mind you, but jazz-rock).

They consist of six members; Grier Cook on guitar and lead vocals, Eay Cork on bass, trumpet, baritone horn and vocals, Johnny Guthie on drums, Ken Mulholland on piano and organ, David Drury on guitar, trombone and vocals and Bob Kenrich on reed instruments and vocals.

The sound is diverse and ranges from the breakbeat funk of Myrthiolate to more experimental type tunes like Shed My Skin. The six-minute plus Don't Pity The Man goes through so many changes that when you're done listening you'll think you just heard four tunes, not one. The closer Myrthiadrine is also quite nice drugged out funk.

The group kicks up a stone groove on four of the tunes and Gomez and Steig kick up a stoned groove (well, perhaps groove isn't the right word) for the other two. The last two tracks have some sounds of vinyl on them. Nothing too bad, just thought I'd mention it in case you're a vinyl-nazi or something.

A nice funky album by Universal Jones who never released a second volume. Released on MGM/Verve in 1972. If you look to the far left on the cover you'll see every beat diggers favourite funk/folk singer Eugene McDaniels, who is a major contributer to this album. Mc D is listed as producer, lead vocalist, writer and acoustic guitar player, Sister Charlotte is the female lead vocalist, Maurice McKinley is on drums, Bob Woos is on guitars and bass, Leon Pendarvis is arranging and conducting the set aswell as playing bass and electric piano. There's additional musicians listed on the back cover.

Listen to the mellow groove of Tuesday Morning for a taste. River sounds like something straight from one of Eugenes solo albums from the early 70's. It's got that folky feel. English group Mandingo released this album on EMI in 1977. Besides sporting a fabulous cover, it contains a hectic, hard-rocking kind of afro-funk. There's a cool version of The Chakachas classic funk track Jungle Fever (though, here it's called Jungle Juice). King Of The Jungle is equally good and The Man From Takoradi has a nice blaxplotation feel to it.

Nice soul with a real fatback sound on some tracks. There's also some jazzy and some bluesy touches here and there. Released on Polydor in 1971, arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. Her version of My Way is really nice and gets lowdown and funky before the fade. Hey World, Let Love In is the song for the straight up funk heads.

Tight funk from the UK. Soulful, funky, smooth grooves with a hint of disco, kind of like George Clinton meets The Blackbyrds. Released on Magnet Records in 1976. People Think Again is dope, with a mellow groove and fitting vocals and Doin' A Parliament Thing is a nice imitation of the Clinton bands.
I'm not sure if it's true but I read that J.A.L.N. stands for Just A Lot of Noise.

Mel Brown - Mel Brown's Fifth

Once again, Mel Brown on Impulse, released in 1971. This one is a whole lot grittier than the other Mel Brown record I posted and it's a whole lot better too, if you ask me. The other players are Jimmy Davis on organ and keyboard bass, Jeff Osborne on drums, Carle Vickers on trumpet, Jake Riley on trombone, Lorenzo Carnegie on alto sax, Onion Miller on tenor sax, Tobie Butler on baritone sax, Clifford Coulter plays electric piano on one tune and Mel's father, John H Brown, contributes a vocal. Other than playing his guitar Mel also plays electric piano, sings and plays bass. The 10 minute jam, Luv Potion is dope.

Isao Suzuki Trio/Quartet - Blow Up

Another record from bass player Isao Suzuki, this one released in 1973 on Three Blind Mice. Suzuki plays bass and cello, Kunihiko Sugano plays piano and fender rhodes, George Otsuka plays drums and a second bass player, Takashi Mizuhashi, is added on four tracks. Aqua Marine is a nice, hypnotic tune with sweet rhodes piano. Blow Up is funkier and sort of hectic.

Rudolph Johnson - The Second Coming

Dope jazz with an edge, which is nothing less than what you expect from a Black Jazz album. Released in 1973, this record features four Rudolph Johnson originals and one tune written by Kirk Lightsey, who plays piano. Doug Sides plays drums, Kent Brinkley plays bass and Rudolph Johnson plays his tenor sax and is also credited as the arranger. All the tunes are nice but The Traveler and The Highest Pleasure stands out for me.

This is a great funky concept record that deals with being black in America, from the slavery days to religion to politics. It was released in 1972 on GSF records. My favorite tracks include the title track and Fair Skin Man, both tracks are masterful dirty funk all the way through.

By 1969 The Jazz Crusaders had begun moving into the funky area of jazz they would focus on for most of the 70's. They still have a good chunk of jazz left in their style though. This was recorded live at the Lighthouse with "their favourite bassist" Buster Williams. The main four Crusaders are Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson, Stix Hooper and Joe Sample. Lighthouse 69' was released on World Pacific Jazz.

I was a little surprised when I couldn't find this one on any blog. Maybe it's just my blogsearching skills that's messing me up. Anyway, this record was released on Mowest in 1972 and contains some rare groove classics, for example Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love and Battened Ships, both great tunes. Another favourite of mine is the rocky funk of Black Top Island (Of The West). Most of the songs fit into the soul category, although there is some songs that makes me wonder how they came to be on this album, Country Tune for example. This was the only album this group ever released (if you're thinking of the disco group of the same name, stop it). Royce Jones and Billy Pierce is doing the lead vocals, Kathleen Warren plays piano, fender rhodes, vibes & sings, Warner Schwebke plays bass, Don Peake and Don Dacus plays guitars and Gene Pello plays drums.

The title pretty much explains it all. From what I understand, this is a pretty obscure record. A couple of the songs are instrumentals to old Motown hits and another couple of songs are new. Released in 1977 on Motowns Natural Resources Label. The sound quality of this one is a little rough at times but that's due to issues with the sound of the actual record, not a glitch in the ripping process.

Don't get thrown off by the cover, this is a nice record. And there is a quality break in here for the beatdiggers too. Secret Oyster is a fusion outfit from Denmark. This is the only record I've heard from them and, as far as I understand it, this is their funkiest record. Recorded in 1975, released on CBS in Holland. The music reminds me of Weather Report, for the most part, but the track Bellevue is pure funk (starts of with a nice long drum break).

Antoher late 60's soul-jazz record on Blue Note. Tenor man Stanley Turrentine recorded this album in 1968 with alot of help from Thad Jones who supplied the arrangments. Jones old drummer freind, Mel Lewis shares drumming duties with Mickey Roker, Bob Cranshaw plays bass, Herbie Hancock or Hank Jones plays piano, Kenny Burrell and Barry Gailbraith is on guitar, Jerry Dodgion and Jerome Richardson is playing saxophones, flute and clarinet, Jimmy Cleveland plays trombone, James Buffington and Dick Berg plays french horns and Burt Collins plays flugelhorn. On my first listen I couldn't really get into this one since I thought it was too pop (with two Lennon-McCartney tunes, plus a cover of Light My Fire). It has grown on me since then though, and I especially like the funky swagger of the backbeat to Little Green Apples. Stoned Soul Picnic is great aswell. On the whole, this album kinda feels like a jazz version of the Mel Brown record I posted.

Todays record by Blue Mitchell was released on the Mainstream label in 1971. It's a lot less funk than his later 70's releases, but it's a nice album no matter what. Walter Bishop Jr. is playing piano and rhodes, Jimmy Forrest is playing tenor sax, Doug Sides is on drums and Larry Gales handles the bass.

Released on Blue Note in 1968 (or 69, I'm not quite sure), this album has a reputation of being one of the best jazz-funk records from the era. It features great work by Lou and his band; Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, Charles Earland on organ and Leo "Idris Muhammad" Morris on drums. Aside from the funky title track there's also two funky donaldson originals in Snake Bone and Brother Soul.

Sun Treader - Zin-Zin

This is jazz-funk, heavy on rhythm, released on Island in 1973. Sun Treader was a project led by drummer Morris Pert who handles drums and percussion. The other members were Peter Robinson on electric pianos (there's plenty of nice rhodes playing on this one), Alyn Ross on bass and Robin Thompson plays soprano saxophone on two of the four tunes. The last song is weird but nice space-out music, while the other three tracks brings the funk.

Rick Laird - Soft Focus

Rick Laird, most famous for his time playing bass with The Mahavishnu Orchestra, recorded this album for the Muse/Timeless label in 1976. However, this vinyl copy of mine wasn't released until 1979, so perhaps this is a re-release, maybe someone can shed some light on this. Anyway, this is much more straight jazz than The Mahavishnu Orchestra, although there is some electric involvement. The players are Joe Henderson, who also produced the date, on tenor saxophone, Tom Grant on piano and rhodes and Ron Steen plays drums. There's some really nice and mellow moments on this one, I especially like it when the rhodes and drums stay in the background accompanying Laird and his electric bass.

Lucky Ranku, Mike Mathome Rose, Penise Saul and Steve Scipio. Steve Scipio was actually the reason I picked this album up since I recognized his name on the back cover as the bass player from Cymande. On this album, his basslines is as bubbly as ever. My favourite track thus far is the mellow funk of Soweto My Love.

Dillard Crume - And The Soul Rockers

Great James Brown-inspired funk/soul from this artist, otherwise mostly known as a gospel singer. Released on Alshire in 1969. I think I read somewhere that Maceo is playing on this, but I don't know. This is one of my personal favourites. Its gritty, late 60's soul produced by David Axelrod and released on the Capitol label. There is a great funk track in Season Of The Witch and a refreshing version of When A Man Loves A Woman, but all the tracks are nice and soulful.

Cleveland Eaton - Plenty Good Eaton

A jazz-funk outing from bass player Cleveland Eaton, with a little early disco feeling. Released on Black Jazz in 1975. Players include Ed Green on violin and viola, Artee Payne on tenor and flute, John Watson on trombone, Ernest Johnson on guitar, Kenneth Prince on electric piano and Morris Jennings on percussion.
On the back cover, Eaton gives props to his musical idols; Maurice White, Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. These influences are not hard to detect on this album.
Cleveland handles the vocalizing himself and he does a fine job, especially on the soul pearl Are You Out There Somewhere Caring. It might not be the greatest vocal in the world from a technical point of view but damn, he sounds cool and confident (think in the lines of Paul Jacksons vocal on God Made Me Funky). There are also two nice jazz tunes, typical for the Black Jazz label.

Horace Silver - All-The United States Of Mind/Phase 3

Jazz-funk (with emphasis on jazz) from Horace Silver, released on Blue Note in 1972. As you might have figured out from the title, All is the third part of his United States Of Mind trilogy. Horace plays electric piano only throughout the record, Cecil Bridgewater plays trumpet, Harold Vick plays tenor saxophone, Richie Resnicoff is on guitar, Bob Cranshaw plays bass and Mickey Roker plays drums. Every song contains vocals (more or less) and the most prominently featured vocalists are Andy & Salome Bey.

Woody Shaw - Blackstone Legacy

This double LP was released by trumpeter Woody Shaw on the Contemporary label in 1971. It is kind of free and funky and bop-ish. I'd guess that any fan of Bitches Brew would enjoy this, at least to some extent, since the influence is evident. Playing alongside Shaw is Gary Bartz on saxophones, Bennie Maupin on tenor sax, bass clarinet and flute, George Cables on piano and rhodes, Ron Carter and Clint Houston on bass (one per channel) and Lenny White on drums. New World is probably my favourite since im a sucker for funky basslines.

Peddlers - Three For All

This record is cool. A cool mix between rock, jazz and soul/funk released in 1970. The Peddlers were a english trio consisting of Roy Phillips on vocals, organ, piano and rhodes (he also wrote a couple of the tunes), Tab Martin on bass and Trevor Morais on drums and percussion.

This is a groovy one from my own neighbourhood of Sweden. A mixture of jazz and funk with some vocals, but its mostly instrumental workouts. Plenty of electronics going on. This one is pretty rare too, I imagine its even rarer outside of sweden so dont skip this one up now that you've come across it. Released on Harvest in 1976. The players are too numerous and I'm too tired to list them all, but check the back cover (included in the zip. file) for full details.

Here's a quick post before I go to bed. Released on Black Jazz in 1973, this record is pretty much the usual Black Jazz-sound, plus there's a sort of pop-jazz version of You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. Get Down is fine ass, funky jazz with a heavy bassline intro. Players are Henry Franklin on bass, Calvin Keys on guitar, Ndugu on drums, Charles Weaver on conga drums and Eddie Gee joins in on tambourine.

Mike Nock - Succubus

This album by pianist Mike Nock was released in 1980 on Sutra Records. Mike is most known to me as founder of The Fourth Way, a jazz-rock group that released two albums (that I know of) in the end of the 60's/beginning of the 70's. This is a little more in a straight jazz direction, although there's still some fusion in there, especially on the track Mind Blind. Alex Foster is playing saxophone, Ratso Harris bass, Tom Rainey drums and Ray Mantilla is playing percussion.

David Liebman - Light'n Up Please

A very groove oriented outing by David Liebman, who is perhaps most famous for his time playing alongside Miles Davis. I would actually say this album should be judged as a funk album rather than as a jazz album. AMG trashed it in their review, but I think, apart from a couple of snoozer moments, that this is pretty fucking groovy. And it should be, since James Browns old partner Pee-Wee Ellis is producing and playing. Its not a fantastic record but definitely worth checking out if youre into jazz-funk.
This record isnt very expensive, I just checked on ebay and there was a ton of used copys there if you should want to own it.

Isao Suzuki Trio - Black Orpheus

Another album by a bassplayer, this was released on the japanese Three Blind Mice label. This one has actually been reissued recently, but I imagine that in some parts of the world it might be tough to to find as anything but an expensive import. However, if you really like it I urge you to buy it.

The session features Isao Suzuki on bass and cello, Donald Bailey on drums and Tsuyoshi Yamamoto on rhodes and piano.

The sound is mostly jazzy with a hint of funkiness on Manha De Carnaval, which is also my favorite track on the album (the rhodes sound especially lovely on that one).

Richard Davis - Dealin'

This album was released on Muse in 1974. The first side is made up of a couple of funky jazz groovers while the second side is on a more mellow tip. The session is led by bassist Richard Davis, who also wrote the tunes. Marvin Peterson is on trumpet, Clifford Jordan on saxophone, Paul Griffin plays Piano, Rhodes, Organ and Clavinet, David Spinozza plays guitar and Freddie Waits is on drums.

Ok, this blogspot is for me to put up vinyl-rips. When I want an album of mine added on my mp3 player, I usually do a blogsearch for it, rather than ripping it from my vinyl copy. I do this beacause im lazy. When I cant find the record im looking for I rip it from my vinyl copy.
From now on, I will be sharing those rips with you, right here, on this blog.

As for the genre of these records, it will mostly consist of jazz, funk, soul and records related to these genres.

And I am no audiophile with expensive equipment, but I will be doing my best to do the original recordings justice (any feedback on my ripping will be greatly appreciated).

On a personal note; Im 20 years old, I live in Sweden and im addicted to Vinyl.

Oh, and as for the name of this blog, I just wrote down the first thing on my mind which happened to be the first lines spoken by Tina Turner in her song Bold Soul Sister (its not an exact quote since I felt I had to include "music" somewhere in the title)
